Spain is not only the most famous country to travel to. Also for Students who prefer to study abroad, the sunny country is on the top of the list. Flamenco, bullfight, tapas bars and the legendary nightlife promise an exciting time of study, that you'll always like to remember. Furthermore, the fluently speech of the Spanish language is a valuable investigation in your future. Altogether, Spanish is spoken in more than 20 countries on four continents by more than 400 million people. Just Chinese and English are still going stronger.

How many universities do exist and how are they organised?

Altogether, there are more than 80 universities (public and private) in Spain. The higher education in Spain is concentrated mainly on the universities. Because of their structure you could name the Spanish universities "integrated universities". They include the whole higher education as a university also covers the following establishments:

How are the studies organised?

The semester is unknown in Spain; the studies are structured in years of studies. The beginning of the academic year is in October and it ends in the middle of June. The course programmes are organised in cycles. Till now, there are short studies of one cycle (primer ciclo), that pass into a first career-related grade, and long time studies of two cycles (primer + segundo ciclo) and doctorates (tercer ciclo). Until 2008/2009 all courses of study in Spain shall be adapted to the bachelor and master system. Like in all parts of Europe, the adaptation is in full swing.

Do they have tuition fees in Spain?

In all Spanish universities they have tuition fees. They vary depending on the university and are determined every year. At the moment, they range between 500 and 900 Euro per year of study.

How can I apply?

It's the general qualification for university entrance that affords to apply at a Spanish University. Also you need a very good knowledge of language, if you like to start your studies in Spain. Beside the application you need to pass a test to prove your Spanish language abilities. This "Prueba de aptitude para el acceso a la Universidad" (aptitude test to have access to a university), that foreigners must pass, is also called "Selectividad".

Specifics?

The constitutional national language is Spanish (Castellano). But local traditions are appreciated in Spain, what means that in the self-governed communities also the local national languages have a public status. In Bilbao there is a basic course Basque recommendable, in Barcelona you have the examination with the Catalan and in Galicia you'll come in touch with their language.
